When our older daughter moved into her new but smaller bedroom, she needed some creative storage solutions to allow her to not use a dresser. She also wanted a double bed instead of a twin bed. Using the same concept as my twin beds, I built her a double bed using Sterlite storage drawers. I was able to use eight drawers in total, four on each side of the bed.
While it wasn't this way originally, she decided she wanted her bed against the wall. Of course, this blocks access to four of the drawers. Now, she just keeps less-frequently accessed items in those drawers and keeps clothing in the drawers on the exposed side of the bed.
